Learn to steek in this one-day steek workshop with Leah Kefgen. The steeking method taught will be machine sewing for reinforcing the steek stitches. Leah will have sewing machines set up and ready for sewing our steeks, and will also have examples of steeked sweaters to show you. No sewing machine experience is necessary. Leah will teach you the basics you'll need to sew your steek stitches. We'll work with a pre-knit swatch, which we'll later use as the back side of a throw pillow case. For the front, you can either knit another square or sew fabric to your knitted swatch. Once we have machine-sewn our column of steek stitches, we'll cut our steeks and learn two different methods for creating a button band.
To prepare for the class:
Knit a swatch to whatever dimensions you would like your throw pillow to be, with a column of 4 purl stitches down the center. For example, a 16” to 18” square is a good size throw pillow.
What to bring:
Your finished swatch
A circular needle the same size you used to knit your swatch
Double-pointed needles - the same size as you used to knit your swatch
Scissors
A tapestry needle
A ribbon at least 3/4” wide, twice the length of your steek column of stitches.
Experience level: Intermediate knitting
Bio: Leah is a serial sweater knitter and has knitted over 50 sweaters. She dislikes purling for long stretches. She prefers steeking whenever possible to avoid purling, including center front cardigans, armholes, & neck openings, especially where stranded color work is involved.
She is excited to share her love of steeking in this workshop.
