Repair what you wear! Give your beloved garments a glow up!

This workshop will highlight the act of repair and clothing adornment with Sashiko Japanese Embroidery. A humble hand-working skill, centuries old, originating in rural Japan, Sashiko’s running stitch insulated work garments for warmth and longevity.

With emphasis on individual choice, we will review various options for patching and repairing your clothing.  Discussion and demonstrations will include Sashiko's backstory, how to prepare the mending area, draw up a grid, layout a Sashiko pattern, and make a stitching plan.

Bring in two or three items from home to assess for mending or decorating. Areas to repair should be no larger than four inches. Denim with Sashiko stitching is a classic. Medium-weight, woven fabrics work well, such as cotton or linen shirts, pants, skirts, or dresses. In addition, home goods such as napkins or tablecloths also benefit from Sashiko mending.

Please no hand-knits, stretchy, or silky fabrics. Denim with a bit of spandex is fine.

All communal tools and materials provided. Take-home kits include Sashiko needles, colorful threads, patches, and pattern instructions.

All skill levels welcome, from novice to veteran hand stitchers!

Please wear your good reading glasses.

Bring your water bottle and a snack.
