Knit Smarter: Magic Loop with Lorilee Beltman
Sunday, December 13 ~ 11:00am – 2:00pm
$65 + materials
Learn how to knit in the round on a small circumference without double-pointed needles using a technique called Magic Loop Knitting. This is accomplished as if by magic on one long circular needle.
We will learn the best practices for the best results, and we will practice two applications. One is for a closed start, like the toe of a toe-up sock. The other is for an open start, like the cuff of a mitten, sleeve, or top-down sock. You will understand how to use your one needle to create any knitting in the round from the size of a finger on a glove to a hat, and everything in between.
Lorilee will include lots of tips for understanding the process and for creating pretty results.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Adventurous beginner to intermediate level. Some experience working in the round is helpful.
HOMEWORK
None, aside from collecting your materials and having your yarn wound and ready.
MATERIALS
- Needles - One 32-inch long circular needle. 24 inches is too short. Choose a circular needle with straight tips. Varieties that have a bend or “elbow” in the needle won't work. Choose a needle with a flexible, yet sturdy cable. For the projects in this class, we use worsted weight yarn but need snug stitches for ribbing. Choose a needle size you would normally use for working the ribbing of a worsted sweater, perhaps US 4 - 6 (3.5 - 4.0 mm).
- Yarn - Choose a lovely skein of worsted weight yarn (100grams). We suggest our Soft Donegal. We have many lovely colors to choose from. Stop by the shop, or call for a FaceTime tour. With one skein you will be able to make two projects in the class handout—a pair of ribbed wrist warmers, and the “spare pocket” pattern. You will also be able to practice just the toe portion of a toe-up sock. If, after class, you want to make a hat (pattern in handout) to match the wrist warmers, you will need a second skein.
OPTIONAL SUPPLEMENTAL YARN AND NEEDLE
Although the class will be conducted using worsted weight yarn, Lorilee will give all students a free download of her cabled sock pattern, “Posh” (normally $6). This way, after class concludes, you can apply the magic loop technique to your sock-knitting skills. You will need the following materials: 400 - 450 yards of fingering-weight sock yarn; one 32-inch long US 1 (2.25 mm) needle or size needed to meet gauge of 32 sts and 44 rows to 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
The pattern code for Posh will be in the students' class handout.
