Kate Atherley is an internationally known knitting author, teacher, and editor. She has written nine books about various aspects of knitting, including a series of four about customizing projects for a perfect fit and style. She\u2019s also the co-founder and publisher of Digits & Threads, an independent, member-supported online magazine about Canadian fibre- and textile arts, crafts, and industry. The combination of her university degree in mathematics, professional experience in software development and usability, and training in garment and fashion design gives her a unique perspective. In addition to sharing methods for changing aspects of garments, we\u2019ll delve deep into strategies for approaching the problem that reduce both the work and the risk. We\u2019ll also discuss how to choose patterns that are easiest to alter, and good designs that can be leaping-off points for your own inspirations.<\/p>\n

Size and Fit: Why the \u201cMedium\u201d Never Fits Quite Right<\/h3>\n

The biggest challenge for many knitters when choosing a pattern is knowing which size to make. This class will show you how to decide – and set you well along the way to a successful and flattering sweater project. We\u2019ll explain how to read sizing tables and schematics to understand how a garment is sized. We’ll show you how to measure yourself properly to make the right choice. And most importantly, we’ll explain garment fit, including demystifying terms like “negative ease”- and show you how to choose the right pattern from the start. And then once you\u2019ve got the pattern and size chosen, we\u2019ll discuss easy alterations to perfect the fit and look of a garment.<\/p>\n

Ann Weaver sees knitting patterns in container ships, Tom Waits lyrics,\u00a0Moby-Dick, classic cocktails, and the work of artists like Josef Albers and Mark Rothko. When she is not traveling to teach knitting workshops or explore thrift stores and estate sales, Ann lives in West Baltimore, where she works as a freelance editor and writer and runs Plied Yarns,<\/strong> a yarn company she started in 2019 with her best friend, Karida Collins. You can follow Ann on Instagram and find her designs on Ravelry, where her username is weaverknits<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Short Row Sampler<\/h3>\n

Then, students can compare the results of the three methods and evaluate their benefits and drawbacks. Never be intimidated by short rows again!<\/p>\n

Braid-o-Rama: Latvian Braids and Variations<\/h3>\n

In this workshop, participants will learn how to work Latvian braids and multiple variations using the technique: braids with long floats, clumps of braids, multiple-color braids, dense layers of braids, and a<\/strong> twisted two-color cast-on<\/strong><\/em>. Students will leave the workshop with a host of techniques and inspiration for
braiding!<\/p>\n

Mend and Embellish<\/h3>\n

Curious about methods to fix knit fabric? Intrigued by visible mending? Interested in adding duplicate stitch to knit fabric? In this workshop, you\u2019ll learn all these skills. We\u2019ll start with an overview of mending techniques, including darning and patching. Then, we\u2019ll cover a few simple ways\u00a0to add both strength and beauty to fabric, including duplicate stitch. You can apply what you learn to many types of fabrics, not just handknits!<\/p>\n

Unlike Betty Crocker, Ann Budd is a real person. But her name is equally legendary to knitters, thanks to her classic Knitter\u2019s Handy Book series, which makes it easy for knitters to design garments to their specifications. Ann is particularly known for her mastery of sock knitting and design and teaches sold-out workshops across the country and abroad. Ann lives in Boulder, Colorado. You can find her at annbuddknits.com<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Join a small group session with Ann Budd. This is\u00a0a fun and informative opportunity to learn tips and tricks directly from the Knit Dr. herself.<\/p>\n

The retreat will begin on Thursday with check-in from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (please note that lunch is not included on Thursday). Classes will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, and the retreat will end following a Continental breakfast on Sunday morning.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The cost for the weekend is $1250 and includes three 3-hour classes, a small group session with Ann Budd,<\/strong><\/em> three continental breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners (Thursday and Saturday), an invitation to our cocktail party Friday night, a SWAG bag filled with seriously great swag, door prizes, and fun, fun, fun!!!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
