So, choose colors accordingly!

Homework: Using any method, cast on 66 sts with one color onto a 16” circular needle. I am a Japanese living in Canada.

I am a dyer, weaver, knitter, and overall fiber art enthusiast. I have been a regular instructor at Vogue Knitting Live and will be teaching at Stitches at Home and Stitches West in the near future. My mission is to inspire, liberate, and empower my fellow fiber artists through my work so that you can keep creating and having fun.

I admit that I am a slow learner. Although I’ve enjoyed working with yarn and fiber since I was small and grew up surrounded by the rich history of textile, my path to get where I am now was not straightforward.

I was originally trained and practiced as an architect in Japan where I hit a glass ceiling early in my career. I moved to Canada and earned a master’s degree in architecture from the University of British Columbia. After finishing my master’s program, I worked as a freelance translator specializing in IT and building engineering. In 1999, I graduated from Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design with honor, where I rediscovered my love of textiles.

In 2004, I joined Fibre Art Studio On Granville Island – a shared textile studio/gallery shop in Vancouver. I started dyeing yarns for my own weaving projects and started offering them to other fiber art lovers as my yarns soon caught their eyes.

In 2014, after my husband suddenly became critically ill, I thought about the meaning of my life and decided to make my fiber art business my full-time job. I opened an online shop on Etsy in 2016 offering hand-dyed yarn. In 2019, I participated in Vogue Knitting Live LaunchPad program – a small business accelerator program for fiber art businesses – which lead to many other opportunities.

A little bit about Jeane…

From a young age, I’ve been fascinated with yarn and all the things you can do with it. I think the earliest project I remember is starting a needlepoint butterfly and “accidentally” leaving it at my auntie’s house. It was proof that all things yarn are magical when Santa returned it to me – completely finished. This led to an education in textiles and fashion but I was led astray to pursue both fashion and computers under various corporate umbrellas.

I finally started my own yarn company in 2005 as a way to continue exploring that lost magic. Elemental Affects (a U.S. yarn company) started out specializing in breed-specific yarns sourced from our local farms and processed wholly in the United States. Along the way, I’ve branched out to include a little bling (silk from China) but always designing yarns that deliver quality construction and celebrate the characteristics of various sheep breeds. elementalaffects.com

Accommodations and Costs

The retreat will begin on Thursday with check-in beginning at 12:30 p.m. (please note that lunch is not included on Thursday). Classes will begin at 9 am on Friday, and the retreat will end following a Continental breakfast Sunday morning.

The cost for the weekend is $875 and includes three 3-hour classes, an appointment with the Knit Doctor, 3 continental breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, an invitation to our cocktail party Friday night, a SWAG bag, and fun, fun, fun!!!

Historic Port Townsend is a beautiful little harbor town with several options for accommodations. The Water Street Hotel, The Palace, and The Swan hotel have graciously given us a 10% discount. All are within an easy walk of the Northwest Maritime Center.
